1. A great invitation tempts guests and informs at the same time. Show your guests how hard you have been planning and how important this day is to you and your fiancé!
2. Allow plenty of time to shop. You should order your invitations when the details of time and place have been confirmed, which should be no later than 4 months before the event. You want to give yourself plenty of time for selecting your design, proofing, production and most importantly, time to address the envelopes once you receive your order. At your initial appointment, we schedule about one to two hours for selecting your wedding papers and composing the verse and schedule follow-up appointments as necessary to finalize your selections.
The average time between placing your order and receiving the finished product is about 6-8 weeks for our in-house custom designs and 3 weeks for national brand invitations. The actual order time may vary. Rush options are available on standard brand invitation orders only while our custom options require special ordered stock, hand assembly, and therefor require longer lead times. The factors which determine production time depend on the company selected, the complexity of your order, the proofing process and method of shipping.
3. Budget smartly: Calculate your invitation budget around four percent of your total budget. Total cost will include printing, addressing if a calligrapher is used, and postage.
Each invitation ensemble is different. Therefor, the actual cost of invitations depends on the paper you select, the quantity you need and ensemble details you include (i.e. enclosures, envelope linings, embellishments, etc.)
4. Order smartly: Don't make the classic mistake of ordering one invitation per guest. Count couples/addresses to determine the number of invitations you will need. Keep in mind that wedding invitations are sold in lots of 25 when determining the number. We suggest that you first confirm your guest list prior to finalizing your order. It is less costly to add a "buffer" on your final head count, rather than place another order for 25 when guest lists expand.
Other tips: Couples or siblings who live together may share an invitation (one per household). Separate invitations should be sent to anyone who is not married and over 18. Be sure to send invitations to everyone in the wedding party and your officiant. Order 25-50 extra envelopes for addressing errors. Don’t forget to keep a few extras for scrapbooks.
5. Postal Considerations: Mail invitations 6-8 weeks before the wedding. Weigh a sample invite at the post office to ensure sufficient postage and check early for stamps appropriate for your event.
Be aware that postage machines are unable to read some metallic inks, so they must be processed manually.
